8th Annual International Marketplace

The Immigrant Women's Centre of Hamilton is hosting the 8th Annual International Marketplace this Friday and Saturday. They were kind enough to let us preview the beautiful wares of local women that are part of the marketplace, and we've featured some of our favourites here! Support women from around the world and start your holiday shopping at the marketplace this weekend. From handmade gifts like jewelry, pottery and candles, to fair trade items that support development initiatives around the world, there are unique and thoughtful gifts to be found for all.

1, 2 & 4. The Thousand Hills is a Hamilton business that works with communities directly in Rwanda. These stunning fruit bowls are handcrafted by a group of Rwanda genocide survivors with naturally dyed sisal and sweet grass. The peace baskets and cathedral baskets are perfect for storing jewelry and makeup, and the intricately-woven baskets can be used in an entrance way to store small items like keys.

3 & 5. Guadalupe Cervantes' business is called Terrassa. These cozy wool ponchos are handmade in Gualupita, Mexico, while the hats and tote bags are crafted in Hamilton with organic jute, recycled cotton liners and leather handles.

6. The Seed Bead Project is a social enterprise that develops creative projects between Hamilton and Ugandan NGOs to encourage sustainability and empowerment. The necklaces are crafted with seeds and coconut shells by designers in Uganda and through Nuture a Child Uganda, the sales provide basic living expenses for 28 orphans.
