Canada Day

It's the long weekend and when it comes to planning parties, we like to keep it simple. A no-fuss approach means more time for the host or hostess to enjoy the company of their guests. We like to stock up on colourful paper plates, napkins and cups. You can never have too many! These are from PC Home and they even have adorable lanterns and ice bins in the same colour scheme. We set up bins with ice around the backyard so our friends can chill and grab their drinks easily. And for those who are driving, we like to fill these milk jar drink dispensers from Pier 1 with raspberry lemonade and water with fresh lemon wedges so they have something refreshing to drink as well. Vintage mason jars are perfect for serving mojitos with fresh mint from the garden. You can even add seasonal fruit like blueberries or simple syrups like rhubarb and ginger to mix up the flavour. With colourful straws, they add some charm to your patio table. Fresh cut flowers from the local park are a nice touch too!

When it comes to deciding on a menu, you can never go wrong with the classics! Who doesn't enjoy a burger or hot dog on a holiday weekend? Grab some fresh veggies from the farmers' market to serve as toppings. And shake things up with your condiments by making your own honey mustard horseradish or avocado mayonnaise. We leave the barbecuing to the men in our life. And we always have veggie options on hand for our vegetarian friends.

We make sure to stock up on tasty, local beer from Beau's All Natural Brewing Company and Mill Street Brewery. These are a hit with our friends. And we may be a bit biased because of their name, but Beau's has the best packaging, don't you think?

The best part though, about celebrating a national holiday is reliving childhood memories and walking over to the local park to set off fireworks and run around with sparklers. Happy Canada Day! We hope you have a fun long weekend with your family and friends.
