The first product I used from the R. Devine Skin Care line was the Sacred Calm cleanser + serum. Before bed, I massaged the cleanser into my skin for about 30 seconds. I removed it with a warm cloth, applied a tiny amount of the same product (it doubles as a serum). Then I hit the pillow (silk of course). To my delight, I woke up to perfectly smooth and refreshed skin. From one product. Seriously. I have been using the serum every day and night since. Curious as to what exactly went into this divine product, I sat down with founder Rachel Devine in hope she would divulge all her beauty secrets. Before starting her skin care line, Rachel was an aesthetician. After having her first child, she began exploring all-natural and organic living, in all aspects of her life. “I wanted to bring this lifestyle into my spa business as well, so I went on a quest to find a 100% natural skin care line,” she explained. “There are a lot of fantastic organic lines out there, but I wanted something Canadian, and something I could feel extremely passionate about.”
The rest of the story goes like this: After months of research, trying to find a line, she decided to create her own. "I have sensitive skin, so I actually only wash my face once a day," she said, "I'm a strong believer that everyone's routine should be minimal." Preach girl. Rachel's philosophy is to allow the skin to function as it's meant to. "Natural products will enhance those functions, not force them like conventional beauty does," she explained. Rachel's process of developing her own products was a long one, consisting of a lot of research and a lot of trial and error. "For months and months, I researched holistic skin care, herbology, essential oils, and everything in between," she said. She later enrolled in a course focusing on organic skin care formulations. "Taking this course really helped my formulations become professional, luxury skin care products."
How do you decide on the ingredients in your products?
While all-natural is nice, organic is so much more important to me. Most conventional farming involves the use of pesticides and other unnatural chemicals that can be harmful to the body. Organic farming avoids all of these chemicals. It's important to treat your skin as respectfully as you do the inside of your body. No would would intentionally eat pesticides, so why feed them to your skin? The skin is the largest organ on the human body. I wanted my products to be as pure, and as truly natural as possible, in order to respect this sacred part of the body.
What is the single best piece of beauty advice you have received?
When I was in school for aesthetics, my skin care instructor always used to say, "Water is your best skin care product", and I couldn't agree more. My skin always looks its best when I'm well hydrated. I can follow my daily skin care routine day in and day out, but if I'm dehydrated, my skin will be the first place to show this. Increasing your water intake by even two glasses of water each day, for two weeks, will make a drastic different in the appearance of your skin.
What are your top lifestyle tips for maintaining good skin?
Drink lots of water, eat a balanced diet that consists of raw food, and take probiotics to increase the good, healthy bacteria within your body. Stress relief is also so important, whether you choose to do this through exercise, meditation or even socializing with friends and family. Stress is one of the number one causes of adult acne, besides hormonal imbalances, so it's important to avoid stress as much as we can. This is also important for our overall health, not just our skin.
Who's your personal beauty icon?
I'd have to say Audrey Hepburn, who to this day, is one of the most popular beauty icons there has ever been. She tried to teach women that beauty goes beyond how you look, it's what's inside that counts. My favourite Audrey Hepburn quote is, "The beauty of a woman is not in facial mode, but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul". Women should embrace their beauty, be confident in themselves and be happy with who they are. Aging gracefully is golden! Too many women see aging as something bad.
You live and work in Hamilton. How has the city or community played a role in your business endeavor?
I am proud to have been born and raised in Hamilton. It is such an amazing city, and you'll never find me anywhere else. I have owned a business in Hamilton since 2004. In my opinion, there's no place quite like Hamilton to own a business. Our community is so supportive of local businesses, and I love how the local business owners all network with one another and help to build one another up. I have met some really incredible, inspirational people through the many young professional networking events that Hamilton has to offer. I have had a lot of interest in my line, but that interest increases even more as soon as people realize that my line is created right here in Hamilton. As Russell Gibbs' shirt says, "You Can Do Anything in Hamilton'. It's so true!
Where would we find you on a day off in Hamilton?
I'm a huge nature lover, so you'll often find me in the Bruce Trails, at local farms, or just out and about enjoying nature. My kids even get excited for our regular "nature walks" on weekends. Spending time in nature is so healing. It nurtures the mind, body and soul, and it's important to me to teach my children this.
